Suggested Reading List

Complimentary to your childbirth preparation classes and a good care
provider, reading helps to educate and inform you of your many, many
choices in childbirth. There are many good books out there and these are
just a few of my favorites because they empower women and are
respectful of pregnancy and birth as a normal life event that surpasses
any everyday miracle.
"An Easier Childbirth" by Gayle H Peterson, PhD.
Gayle Peterson's pioneering work on the body-mind processes of pregnancy
and birth have inspired such philosphies as Robin Sale's Whole Birth™
Resources and Pamela England's Birthing From Within. Dr. Gayle has a
wonderful web site with articles and books at http://www.askdrgayle.com
Her book "An Easier Childbirth" helps women and families work through the
emotional dynamic of pregnancy and birth.
"Birthing From Within" by Pamela England and Horowitz
Pamela's book is different from any other pregnancy book. She helps couples
explore the inner dynamics of the life transition of birth based on Gayle
Perterson's model of body-centered birth.

"The Complete Pregnancy Book" by Sheila Kitzinger
A wonderful and comprehensive book about everything to do with pregnancy
and birth. If you only by one general book about pregnancy, this is the one!
Sheila emphasises the normal process of birth and informs couples on the myriad
of options available to them in different birth settings, as well as month by month
descriptions of pregnancy, nutrition, etc...

"The Natural Pregnancy Book" by Aviva Jill Romm
Aviva Jill Romm is a respected herbalist and midwife who simplifies using herbs
safely during pregnancy, birth and postpartum. She also explores pregnancy
month by month, emotional dynamics and includes a comprehensive list of
common ailments and discomforts of pregnancy and how to treat them naturally.

"Gentle Birth Choices" by
A book about making choices in your pregnancy and birth that are respectful,
gentle and healthy for couples and babies. Waterbirth is explored in detail with
many studies and medical information to back up its safety and effectiveness.

Books to Avoid

Just as the books above empower women and couples to be active
decision makers in their birth choices, some books promote fear and
distrust in our bodies and encourage couples to put themselves
completely in the hands of medical professionals. While I believe the
medical profession has good intentions and are necessary on the rare
occasions that things go wrong in birth; healthy, normal pregnant women
do not need the fear and distrust that these books instill.

"What to Expect When Your Expecting"
Probably the most popular pregnancy book on the market, this book creates fear
and dissapointment in women by setting them up for failure. While this book is
written by medical professionals much of the information, like the obstetrical
field itself is based on myth and tradition rather than scientific research.
